Visiting a care home for the first time can feel overwhelming.
There may be lots to take in, particularly if you’re trying to make an important decision for someone you love. Having a few questions prepared can help you look beyond first impressions and understand what everyday life in the home might actually be like.
How Will You Get to Know My Relative?
Person-centred care begins with understanding the person.
Ask how staff learn about residents’ routines, preferences, interests and life histories.
How would they find out how Mum likes her morning tea, that Dad enjoys listening to the radio after lunch or that someone has always preferred a late breakfast?
The answers can tell you a lot about how personalised the care really is.
How Do You Support Independence?
Ask how residents are encouraged to continue doing things for themselves.
Good care should provide help where it is needed without automatically taking over. This could include supporting someone to choose their clothes, continue a hobby, move around safely or make decisions about their daily routine.
What Is Everyday Life Like?
Activities calendars are useful, but don’t only ask what organised activities are available.
Ask what happens on an ordinary Tuesday morning.
Can residents choose whether to participate? Are there quieter options? How are individual interests supported? Can residents continue routines that are important to them?
Everyday life matters just as much as special events.
How Will You Keep Our Family Involved?
Communication can provide enormous reassurance once a loved one moves into care.
Ask who families speak to if they have a question, how changes are communicated and how relatives can remain involved.
You should feel comfortable asking questions, sharing information and raising concerns.
Pay Attention to How the Home Feels
Finally, take some time to look around.
Are residents relaxed? Do staff stop and talk to them? Do people greet one another naturally? Does the home feel welcoming rather than simply looking impressive?
At Abbey Lea and Westwood, we encourage families to visit, ask questions and experience the atmosphere for themselves.
Choosing residential care is a major decision. Take your time, ask what matters to your family and look for somewhere where you can genuinely imagine your loved one feeling known, comfortable and at home.
