Helping a Loved One Settle Into a Care Home

Published: 25th August 2026

Moving into a care home is a significant change. Even when everyone agrees it is the right decision, it can take time for a new environment to begin feeling familiar.
Families can play an important role in making that transition easier. A few thoughtful steps can help a loved one feel more comfortable, reassured and connected as they settle into their new home.

Bring Familiar Things With Them

A new room can feel unfamiliar at first, so personal belongings can make a real difference. Favourite photographs, ornaments, a familiar blanket, books or even a much-loved chair can help create a sense of home.
These belongings are more than decoration. They can hold memories and provide comfort, particularly for someone living with dementia.

Share the Little Details

Care plans contain important information, but families often know the details that aren’t written down.
Perhaps Mum always has tea before breakfast. Dad likes the radio on in the morning. Maybe they prefer a particular television programme or have followed the same bedtime routine for years.
Sharing these details helps staff understand the person behind the care needs and maintain some of the routines they enjoyed before moving.

Keep Visiting, But Allow Time to Adjust

Regular visits can provide reassurance during the first few weeks. However, settling in is also about gradually becoming familiar with new people, surroundings and routines.
Every resident is different. Some people quickly become comfortable, while others need more time. Try not to worry if your loved one doesn’t immediately feel settled.
Keeping communication open with the care team can help you understand how they are adjusting when you aren’t there.

Encourage Familiar Routines

Moving into care doesn’t mean everything about someone’s life needs to change.
Continuing favourite hobbies, watching familiar programmes, enjoying preferred foods or following established routines can provide a sense of normality. Families can help by telling staff what really matters to their loved one.

Give It Time

There isn’t a set amount of time someone should take to settle into a care home. Moving is a big adjustment at any age.
At Ochre Care, our teams at Abbey Lea and Westwood take time to get to know each resident as an individual. From their routines and preferences to the things that make them smile, understanding those details helps a new environment gradually become somewhere that feels familiar.
